Artist Statement
The relationship between the built environment and the natural world fascinates me. So does the fleeting nature of time, and how in just an instant, light, color, mood, and story can transform into something completely new. As an artist, community builder, and educator, I find inspiration in how people interact with the natural world and with each other, and how the environment shapes who we are. I enjoy observing and capturing fleeting nuances of life, color and light through plein air painting. Painting on-site directly from life, allows me to snapshot moments in time that help tell the story of present-day.
I am a descendent of immigrants who came to this country as Croatian oyster fishermen and sailors. My cultural foundation is built on a maritime heritage and long-time relationships to the sea. For centuries my family has lived by the sea, with the sea, and from the sea. Growing up in a Navy family meant moving to a new oceanside community every year or two. Living in Houston, where seven bayous course their way to the sea, I have developed an appreciation for our waterways in the Bayou City. Much of my art is inspired by areas on or near water.
Artist Bio
Watercolor, sketching, and being a designer have always been passions of Karla Cisneros, even as life diverted her in other directions.
She studied marine ecology in college because of her connection to the sea, but discovered that she was not a scientist at heart. She was drawn to art, but switched and studied architecture instead because it sounded more practical than being an artist. Karla became a certified teacher because her own children grew up and she missed them. Being an educator then led to becoming a city council member with a focus on improving opportunities for children. She and her husband of 40+ years, are now enjoying the delights of grandchildren.
In her eight years serving on Houston City Council, Karla was a leading advocate and supporter for public art, opportunities for artists, and embracing art as a rich form of communication. Her education includes a Master’s Degree in Architecture, a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, and also certification as an Elementary School Teacher.
As a forty-five-year resident of Houston, she is finally embracing her true calling. She has come full circle, both older and wiser now, and grateful for the chance to jump into art with both feet this time! She is a member of a very dynamic community of Houston artists and is excited to continue her dedication to public service through her art.
Why Art? Why Now?
The short video below was the culminating project of the Artist INC program that Karla graduated from in May 2024. Her narrative shares more of her life story and what led her to become a professional artist.
